Jane Bernstein’s first teaching experience was at Rehabilitation Phase Halfway, a halfway house in the Lower East Side in New York, where she taught a poetry workshop. She also ran poetry workshops at Phoenix House, a drug rehabilitation program in Brooklyn. Her earliest college-level experience was as a coadjutant instructor of journalism and mass media at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey. Later, she was a lecturer at Rutgers University in New Brunswick.

In 1991, she joined the Creative Writing Program at Carnegie Mellon University. Since then, she has taught seminars and workshops in fiction, nonfiction, and screenwriting and has spoken widely about disability issues. In 2004, she was a Fulbright Lecturer at Bar-Ilan University in Ramat Gan, Israel.
